Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an invention marathon. Students come together in teams to build cool software and hardware projects over 24 hours.

Who can attend?

vhHacks is open to all high school students of all skill levels. If you're older (post-secondary or above) and have experience in computer science, you can apply to be a mentor.

How much does it cost?

Nothing! vhHacks is completely free of charge at the event. However, if you are booking a stay near the event, or taking public transport, those will cost money.

Will there be food?

Yes. Food and snacks are provided throughout the event, even overnight! (We know you night owls get the munchies) There are also restaurants around the venue to buy food and snacks, and you can always bring your own!

What if I'm a beginner?

Hackathons are very beginner friendly. Whether you've already been in many hackathons before, you're pursuing computer science, or an absolute beginner, you're the right fit for vhHacks. Artists, musicians, athletes, gamers, everyone!

Where is the event?

vhHacks will be taking place at the UBC Hennings building in room 200. You can find details about the room here and directions to the venue here.

Teams

How big can my team be?

Teams are usually 2-4 people in size. Teams bigger than 4 will be split up into smaller ones, since larger teams aren't usually the best solution for a 24 hour event.

What happens if I don't have a team?

No worry! A lot of other hackers are in the same position. vhHacks staff will help you find other teammates and provide you with opportunities to find others!

At the Event

What should I bring?

Since vhHacks is a 24 hour event, prepare to stay overnight! Food is provided at the event, so don't worry about that. More information will come sooner to the event.
